How long does one Saxenda pen last? Dosage and usage instructions explained | Goodweigh

Planning is essential. Determine exactly how long your Saxenda pen will last during each stage of your treatment.

How long does one Saxenda pen last?

Saxenda is administered using an injection pen that you dose yourself daily. But how long does one pen actually last? It depends entirely on your dosage, which changes throughout the course of your treatment. In the first few weeks, the dose is smaller than in the later stages of treatment, meaning one pen lasts longer at the beginning than it does later on. This blog explains exactly how this works, what you can expect during the dose escalation phase, and how Goodweigh helps you manage your supply smoothly.

How many doses are in one Saxenda pen?

Each Saxenda pen contains 3 milliliters of liquid with a concentration of 6 mg per milliliter. This equals 18 mg of liraglutide per pen. Depending on the dose you are using, one pen contains between six and ten daily doses. At the starting dose of 0.6 mg per day, one pen theoretically provides about thirty doses, which corresponds to a five-week supply. However, as soon as your dosage increases—which happens weekly—the duration of a single pen decreases accordingly.

This is one of the things that sometimes surprises users: a pen that lasts well over two weeks in the first week will be empty after just six days by the fifth week. This is not an error or a defect; it is exactly how the dosing schedule is intended to work.

How does the dosage affect the pen's duration?

The Saxenda dosing schedule is designed so that your body gradually gets used to the active ingredient, liraglutide. You start with 0.6 mg per day in the first week and increase the dose by 0.6 mg each week until you reach the maximum maintenance dose of 3.0 mg per day in the fifth week. This gradual increase helps reduce side effects like nausea and fatigue, which are most common when the dose is increased too quickly.

The relationship between dosage and pen usage is simple: the higher the dose, the more liquid is used in each injection, and the faster the pen empties.

How long does Saxenda last on average during the first few weeks?

During the first month of treatment, you will need an average of three pens, even if that might seem like a lot. This is in line with the dose escalation plan: in weeks one and two, you use relatively little liquid per pen, but as the dosage increases in weeks three and four, the pens are used up faster. For this reason, Goodweigh provides three pens as standard for the first month so that you can complete the entire dose escalation phase without interruption. It is important not to interrupt treatment or skip days due to an empty pen. Your doctor will help you plan deliveries so that you always have an adequate supply.

How long does one pen last at the maximum dosage?

From the fifth week onwards, you will be using the full maintenance dose of 3.0 mg per day. At this dosage, one pen will run out after about six days. This is normal and completely in line with the treatment structure. In practice, this means that in the second month of treatment, you will need five pens per month to maintain the 3.0 mg daily dose. Goodweigh delivers these automatically every month so that your treatment can continue without interruption.

What if the pen seems to run out sooner?

Sometimes users report that their pen seems to run out faster than expected. There can be several reasons for this. First, air in the pen: follow the official instructions for performing a "flow check" before every injection. This involves injecting a small amount of medication to remove any air bubbles. Second, incorrect administration could be a factor: if the needle is not inserted correctly or the skin is not held firmly enough during the injection, medication may be wasted. Third, some users misread the dose on the pen, which can lead to accidentally administering a larger dose.

In case of uncertainty, it is always wise to contact your doctor through Goodweigh. Your doctor can assess whether it is a user error or another issue. Also, always refer to the package leaflet provided with the pen.

Clarity for your Saxenda treatment

Consumption depends entirely on your personal dosage and the stage of your treatment. In the first few weeks, one pen lasts longer; at the full 3.0 mg dose, one pen runs out after six days, and that is exactly as it should be.
