How do you administer an Ozempic injection?

Ozempic is administered using an injection pen. While that might sound a bit daunting, it is actually quick and easy to learn how to use.

Ozempic is administered using an injection pen. That might sound daunting, but in practice, it is easy and quick to learn.

Where on the body should Ozempic be injected?

Ozempic is administered as a subcutaneous injection, meaning just under the skin. The most suitable injection sites are:

  • the abdomen (at least two centimeters away from the navel)
  • the thigh (front or side)
  • or the upper arm (outer side)

It is important to rotate injection sites to prevent skin irritation. You do not need to inject deeply: the medication works through the fatty layer under the skin, where the active ingredient is absorbed slowly. When you start treatment with Goodweigh, we will send you a brochure that includes a link to an instructional video. This way, you can always be sure that you are injecting correctly.

How often should the injection be given?

Ozempic is administered once a week, always on the same day. This regular schedule ensures that the level of the active ingredient (semaglutide) in your body remains stable.

The medication has a long duration of action. It remains active for about a week, which is why weekly injections are sufficient.

What do you need for the injection?

For each injection, you will need the following:

  • An Ozempic pen (with the correct dosage)
  • A new, sterile needle
  • An alcohol swab for cleaning the skin, if needed

Always check the pen before use: the liquid should be clear and colorless. Store the pen in the refrigerator, but let it warm up to room temperature for a moment before use to make the injection more comfortable. The pen makes injecting easy, so you don't need to stay home for it. Feel free to take the pen with you when traveling so you can take your dose as part of your normal routine.

Step-by-step: how to dose Ozempic

  1. Wash your hands and check that the pen is ready for use.
  2. Attach a new needle to the pen and remove the cap.
  3. Set the correct dose according to the instructions provided by your doctor or nurse.
  4. Choose an injection site: abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.
  5. Clean the skin with an alcohol wipe (optional).
  6. Insert the needle under the skin at a 90-degree angle and slowly press the injection button.
  7. Wait 6 seconds after pressing to ensure all the liquid has been delivered.
  8. Remove the needle, dispose of it safely, and put the cap back on the pen.

The first few times, it may be helpful to do this under supervision or with Goodweigh's onlineinstructions at your fingertips.

Does the injection hurt?

The Ozempic needle is very thin and short, which is why most people barely feel the injection. Sometimes you may feel slight pressure or a prick, but it usually passes quickly. Tip: give the injection when you are relaxed and do not pull the skin too tight. It might feel nerve-wracking the first time, but after 1–2 times, everyone can do it easily and painlessly.

What if you forget an injection?

If you have forgotten an injection, we recommend taking it as soon as possible, provided it is within 5 days of your usual injection day.

Has it been more than 5 days? Skip the dose and continue as normal on your next weekly injection day. We recommend setting a fixed time in your calendar for the first few weeks. This will help you avoid forgetting or skipping a dose. If you have any questions, we are of course always available to help you figure out the best solution for your specific situation.
