Saxenda side effects: what to expect? | Goodweigh

Learn about the potential side effects of Saxenda, how you can manage your symptoms, and why medical guidance is essential for successful weight loss.

What are the side effects of Saxenda?

Saxenda is a proven and effective tool for weight loss, but like any medication, it can have side effects. This blog post explains what side effects may occur, when they typically appear, and how Goodweigh supports you in ensuring a safe and comfortable treatment experience. You can also find more information about Saxenda as a weight-loss medication on our medication page.

What are the most common side effects of Saxenda?

The most common side effects of Saxenda are related to the digestive system. Nausea is the most frequent: most users experience it during the early stages of treatment. Vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation are also reported regularly, as is headache. Less frequently, symptoms such as sleep disturbances (especially during the first three months), a slightly elevated heart rate, and injection site reactions, such as small red spots or mild swelling, may occur. These symptoms may sound unpleasant, but for most people, they are mild and temporary. As demonstrated in the extensive clinical study that formed the basis for Saxenda's approval, the vast majority of participants chose to continue treatment even if they experienced side effects at the beginning.

Are there any known rare or serious side effects?

Yes, but fortunately, they are rare. The best-known serious side effect is acute pancreatitis. Additionally, anaphylactic reactions have been described: severe allergic reactions manifesting as shortness of breath, facial swelling, or a sudden drop in blood pressure. Cholecystitis (gallbladder dysfunction) and acute kidney failure due to severe dehydration are also mentioned in the product information. Finally, it should be noted that with repeated injections in the exact same spot, there is a small risk of cutaneous amyloidosis, which is a local accumulation of proteins in the skin.

All these complications are exceptional and occur significantly more often without medical supervision. Precisely because Goodweigh works in collaboration with registered physicians and coaches, symptoms are identified at an early stage.

When do Saxenda side effects usually start?

Side effects most often appear in the first weeks of treatment, especially when the dose is increased. The Saxenda dosage is increased according to a fixed schedule: treatment begins with a daily dose of 0.6 mg, which is increased by 0.6 mg every week until a daily maintenance dose of 3.0 mg is reached. With each dose increase, the body reacts again to the higher concentration, which can temporarily cause slightly more nausea or stomach upset.

Once the body has become accustomed to a certain dose, the symptoms subside significantly for most people. If the medication is poorly tolerated, the dose increase can be slowed down. There is no reason to struggle if it is truly not working out: that is exactly the right moment to contact your treating physician through Goodweigh.

What can you do when mild symptoms occur?

Mild nausea or stomach upset is unpleasant but very manageable. Often, a few practical changes help significantly. Eat smaller portions and avoid fatty, heavy meals, especially in the first few hours after an injection. Take the injection at a fixed time, preferably in the evening before bedtime, so that the peak concentration is reached while you sleep. Rotate the injection site regularly between the abdomen, thigh, and upper arm so that the skin has enough time to recover. Drink enough water throughout the day, as good hydration reduces the risk of dehydration and associated headaches. Rest and patience are also important measures: the body needs time to get used to the GLP-1 agonist.

When should you contact a doctor?

There are situations where you should contact us immediately, without waiting. Severe, persistent abdominal pain that radiates to the back may indicate acute pancreatitis and requires immediate medical evaluation. Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat are signs of a potential allergic reaction. Severe dehydration, which you might recognize by extreme thirst, dark urine, or dizziness, also requires prompt action. At Goodweigh, you can always reach out with questions and symptoms: our medical team is ready to quickly assess the situation and adjust the treatment if necessary. You can read about how the Goodweigh program works and what support you can expect on our program page.

Do side effects go away on their own?

For most people, the answer is yes. The gastrointestinal issues typical of the initial phase of Saxenda subside for the vast majority of users as their body adjusts to the medication. According to comparative research, this phenomenon is common with GLP-1 agonists: side effects are most intense at the start of treatment and when the dose is increased, after which they diminish significantly. After six to eight weeks, many people report almost no stomach issues at all on the maintenance dose. Sleep disturbances, which may last a little longer, usually improve after the first three months.

How does Goodweigh help manage Saxenda side effects?

Goodweigh is more than just a medication supplier. It is a medically supervised program where doctors and coaches actively monitor your progress. After starting treatment, you can track your progress through the platform and ask the medical team questions at any time. If bothersome or persistent side effects occur, a doctor will assess whether your dosage plan needs to be adjusted or if additional guidance is required. The Goodweigh medically supervised weight loss program is designed to ensure you can complete your treatment safely and comfortably, even if the start is a little challenging.
