What are the side effects of Ozempic?

Most Ozempic users experience mild and temporary side effects, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. For most, these resolve on their own.

What are the most common side effects of Ozempic?

Most Ozempic users experience mild and temporary side effects, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. According to the Dutch National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland), the most common are gastrointestinal symptoms. This is because Ozempic slows down gastric emptying, which causes changes in digestive hormones.

The most common side effects are:

  • Nausea or a feeling of fullness
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Constipation or, conversely, diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue

These symptoms usually disappear on their own as your body adjusts to the treatment. For a full list of side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

Patients with impaired kidney function may experience gastrointestinal symptoms slightly more often. Therefore, it is especially important to discuss any symptoms thoroughly with your Goodweigh doctor. At Goodweigh, we ask you to complete a short assessment form every 4 weeks so you can share it with your doctor.

Fortunately, most side effects are temporary and easy to manage. Our medical team will monitor your progress and provide advice on how to alleviate any symptoms so you can continue your treatment safely and comfortably.

Are there also rare or serious side effects?

Very rare but more serious side effects can occur, such as:

  • Severe gastrointestinal symptoms, such as inflammation of the stomach
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), identified by severe abdominal pain that radiates to the back
  • Hypersensitivity reactions or allergies involving swelling of the face, lips, or throat (angioedema)

Studies show that these side effects occur in only a small percentage (0.01–0.1%) of users. If abdominal pain, vomiting, or swelling persists, it is important to contact a doctor immediately. At Goodweigh, you will receive support from our medical team.

When do side effects usually occur?

Most symptoms appear during the first few weeks after starting treatment or increasing the dose. This is because your body needs to adjust to the medication. For most people, the symptoms disappear on their own once the body has become accustomed to the dose.

What can you do yourself if mild symptoms occur?

There are several ways to alleviate mild side effects:

  • Eat slowly and in smaller portions. Large meals can worsen nausea.
  • Choose easily digestible food. For example, soup, crackers, or yogurt.
  • Maintain your fluid balance. Drink small sips of water regularly.
  • Schedule your injections for the same time each day. It helps your body get used to the routine.
  • Rotate your injection site. This helps you avoid potential skin irritation at the injection site.
  • Avoid fatty or sugary meals. They can aggravate stomach issues.

When should you contact a doctor?

Always contact a doctor or the Goodweigh nursing staff if:

  • You have severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • You have severe vomiting or symptoms of dehydration
  • you notice jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) or dark urine
  • experience swelling or difficulty breathing after the injection

Goodweigh makes this easy: through our online platform, you can consult with a doctor quickly and securely without waiting in line or visiting a hospital. In an emergency, always call 112.

Are the side effects of Ozempic permanent?

In most cases, side effects are temporary and transient. Once your body has adjusted to Ozempic, the symptoms usually disappear on their own. Serious or permanent side effects are extremely rare and are always carefully monitored. Side effects such as headaches and nausea will subside once the medication wears off and will generally improve over time.
