When are you eligible for GLP-1 medication?

Are you wondering if you are eligible for GLP-1 medications like Ozempic or Wegovy? Read on to see if you are a candidate for Goodweigh treatment.

GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro , have surged in popularity in recent years as aids for weight loss. However, not everyone automatically meets the criteria for these treatments. In this blog, we explain when you are eligible for GLP-1 medication – and what you can expect.

What exactly is GLP-1 medication?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone naturally produced by the body that regulates appetite. GLP-1 medications mimic this hormone and result in the following:

  • Reduced hunger
  • You eat more slowly and feel full faster
  • Your blood sugar levels are better regulated

These medications were originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, but they have also proven effective for weight loss.

When are you eligible for treatment?

In the Netherlands, GLP-1 medication is prescribed to overweight or obese individuals under specific conditions.

You are generally eligible for treatment if:

✅ Your BMI is:

  • ≥ 30 (obesity) or
  • ≥ 27 and you also have a health risk (such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, or insulin resistance)

✅ You have already tried to lose weight multiple times

For example, through diet, coaching, or exercise – but without lasting results.

✅ You are motivated to change your lifestyle

GLP-1 is not a "quick fix." It works best in combination with a healthy diet, exercise, and coaching.

✅ You have no medical contraindications

Such as certain stomach or intestinal conditions, pancreatitis, or pregnancy. A doctor will assess whether the treatment is safe for you.

Is GLP-1 medication covered by insurance?

In some cases (for example, with type 2 diabetes), health insurance companies cover the medication. When the medication is used for weight loss without diabetes, coverage is currently not standard in the Netherlands. Only the medication Saxenda is currently covered for the treatment of adults who do not have type 2 diabetes but have an extremely high weight-related health risk, who do not (yet) meet the criteria for metabolic surgery, and who have participated for at least one year in an RIVM-approved GLI program without achieving sufficient weight loss. Goodweigh offers GLP-1 treatments on a self-pay basis.
